My name is Brett McDurfee and I was born in 1997. Soon after I was born, my father took me to Ralph Wilson Stadium, held me up like Simba did with Kion from the Lion King, and dedicated me to a Bills fan. Back in Florida, before I could talk, and barely could walk, I noticed something strange happening to my father on Sundays that seemed to carry with him throughout the week. Some Sundays, he would be elated and filled with pride, other Sundays, he would be disgusted, angry and a real good man to avoid. (Not me, I'm his baby). But no matter how he felt afterward, he would never miss a game. A Bills game.
When I learned to talk (to this day, my father regrets that happening), I asked him about football and the different teams. His explanation was this: "Don't worry about it. You're a Bills fan. You have no choice in the matter as long as I'm alive. I have chosen for you, you are a Bills fan."
Now let me tell you why I've always chosen to be a Bills fan.
Growing up, I traveled to western NY many times. Both my mother and my father have family there, friends and both of my grandparents lived there. I have had the pleasure of experiencing the beauty and vibe of the area. But, mostly, I got to know and appreciate the personality of the people that live there. Not just my family members, but the people we would meet along the way, the hard-working, salt-of-the-earth, fun-loving people of Western NY. You just feel a little different, a little better, when you're around these people. So a trip home became more than just feeling the love of my family, and experiencing western NY with all it has to offer, it was also about falling in love with the people of western NY. The people of Western NY and I share something in common. We love family, life, and last but not least, we love the Buffalo Bills.
So, I choose to be a Bills fan. I have always chosen to be a Bills fan. (And yes, I will continue letting my father think he chose for me) because it just feels right. No matter how they do, no matter how frustrated I get, as long as they are in western NY, I will always choose to be a Bills fan. And even though I'm 1200 miles away, being a Bills fan, is in my heart. It's where I belong. It feels like home.
Hope to see you at the game.
Love
Brett McDurfee
